What's New?

Coming Events:

Wayne County Reads has selected "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, a semi-autobiographical novel about the Vietnam War, as the 2014 book. This book was a finalist for both the 1990 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award.

  • Vietnam War: A Historical Overview presented by Dr. Alan Lamm Tuesday, February 25 at 7pm.

The Vietnam War divided Americans then and now. Those on the right saw it as part of the epic Cold War struggle. They feared that if it fell, the rest of Southeast Asia would fall, too, just like a row of dominoes. Those on the left believed it was an unjust war of imperialism. Which side, if either, is correct? Why were we in Vietnam? And why did the war end the way it did?

Dr. Lamm, Chair of the History Department at the University of Mount Olive, is a former U.S. Army Chaplain (Captain) and Army Historian.

  • Wings and Wrenches: An Oral History of the 6th Air Commando Squadron by Arthur Halliday Monday, February 17 at 7pm.

The topic will be a short history of the 6th Air Commando Squadron during the period from late 1967 until late 1969.  The discussion and slide show of period photographs will cover the aircraft and the men, both pilots and the maintainers who worked to insure the aircraft were safe.

Arthur Halliday, an adjunct history professor at the University of Mount Olive, is a Vietnam Veteran.

Please visit the Wayne County Reads website for the full listing of events being held in February.  All Wayne County Reads events are free and welcome to the public.
